Do I need a Passport from Tijuana to Mexico?

I'm going to go on a trip to Mexico. My "plan" is to take a bus from Los Angeles to Tijuana and take an airplane to Mexico. Do I need a passport even if I am technically on Mexican soil or should/can I just take my Birth Certificate, ID, and Social Security Card?
